Review: Mariposa Inn and Suites
By Kathy Chin Leong

Monterey is the ideal family vacation spot, and the Mariposa Inn and Suites makes it the ideal hotel for families as well. During a recent stay in townhouse room 308, we were blessed with the comfort and amenities of this lovely room, and the kindness of the front desk, housekeeping, and the morning kitchen staff was a-plus!

I recommend staying in the townhouse suite if you want a little privacy from the kids. The main bedroom is upstairs, and a Murphy bed is below with a sofa, so three kids could sleep downstairs. Just make sure that stairs is not an issue with your little ones as you don't want anyone falling.

What I love about this place are all the amenities that are available as part of the overnight cost. Complimentary Wireless Internet, breakfast, pool and whirlpool, garage parking, access to lobby computer and printer. And in the rooms, certain bennies will make parents stand up and cheer.  You get things such as refrigerator, coffee and tea maker with coffees and teas, a safe, full bath products including sewing kit and plastic hair bonnet, and nice white robes in the closets, and a microwave to warm up baby milk or leftovers.

The rooms are curated in eggplant purple, soft goldenrod,  and pumpkin orange with art images of sea urchins and other Monterey creatures.  The hotel was remodeled in 2008' and is part of the Personality Hotels family of boutique hotels.

Our townhouse room was clean, comfy, quite large and roomy, and I could envision my nephew spreading his Lego blocks all over the floor and still having ample room to maneuver.  The only glitch we had was the fireplace that was way too loud when we turned it on, so we left if off most of the time.

At breakfast, the all pleasing waffle maker was on hand along with a bevy of carb treasures - muffins, croissants, bagels, English muffins, raisin bread, white bead, Danishes.  Packages of instant oatmeal, yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, dried fruit, hot water, juices, milk, and coffee were readily available. I think it would be nice if they offered boiled eggs so we could have a little protein and something a tad savory.

The location on Munras Avenue takes you to the edge of town, so note that you are not walking distance to the aquarium. However, you are across the street from Del Monte Shopping Center, convenient for the major chain restaurants such as California Pizza Kitchen Nad PF. Changs.  The movie theater is right at the shopping center, so we took in a movie while we came up for the weekend.

The hotel is also close to Hwy 1 and a jaunt to Carmel is less than ten minutes away.  I give this hotel two thumbs up, and yes, I would come and stay here again... And again!
