Indonesian-inspired Pantai Inn opens in La Jolla
By Kathy Chin Leong

We came, we saw, we relaxed.  The new Pantai Inn is La Jolla's newest jewel in the crown of lovely inns and hotels in the San Diego area. Based on an Indonesian theme, the inn has opened ten suites, but will have 40 suites completed by 2013. Each will be decorated with wood-carved furnishings stone carvings, and artwork from Bali.  To date, the inn features one to two-bedroom suites, and also rents out is adjacent three-bedroom villa. With great access to the beach across the street, to shops and restaurants up the hill,  coupled with great service and amenities, BAFT gives the Pantai two hearty thumbs up!

Truly, my favorite feature of this inn is its location- directly across the street from the ocean.  I so enjoyed being lulled to sleep by  the alluring waves at night, and I woke up refreshed. It was great to be able to go on an early morning walk in this safe neighborhood and see the flight of the many types of birds and witness sea lions basking in the sun.

Service was fantastic during our three-night stay. Helpful staff was all smiles when we arrived, and they were super helpful at breakfast when we needed more fruit. The continental breakfast is a nice one with pastries, fruit,  yogurt, juices and coffee/tea. The outdoor patio which was still being worked on was a good place to land for breakfast as it has tables and plenty of seating.
The  charming property used to be the Shell Beach Apartments-Motel, and the owners have used the same footprint and remodelled the property with  refined tastefulness.

Exquisite tropical plants, waterfalls, and handsome landscape lighting even stop the tourists who are walking by in their tracks. They eagerly pause to take a photo in front of the gorgeous waterfall and plantings. Take note: no pool is available, but a full-service spa is in the works. Inside, rooms include fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens with state-of-the-art appliances, wood-carved canopy beds from Bali, bamboo blinds, Balinese art and wood carvings, wall-mounted 55-inch flat panel TVs with premium HD TV channels. Bathrooms are small, but have  with floor-to-ceiling granite, quartz, carved tile, stone and hand-pounded copper sinks.  The property also offers complimentary Wi-Fi access, and valet parking.
Costs for a 1-bedroom suite start at $399, while a 3-bedroom suite starts at $599. Once the hotel’s restoration of all 40 suites is completed, rates will jump to $599.
