Restaurant Review: La Condesa for Kids
By Kathy Chin Leong
If you thought Napa restaurants were entirely unaffordable for families, it's high time to rejoice and cheer. La Condesa Mexican restaurant in St. Helena is THE place to bring the kids on a day outing in wine country. Don't let the long cocktail and beverage bar scare you. The place is very muchacho-friendly.
The restaurant on Main Street with high ceilings and giant posters, turquoise walls, and pendant lights is both casual and classy. The coolest aspect of the decor is the window seat waiting area with white comfortable couches where children can be found playing their handheld video games while Mom and Dad continue eating their meals.
And speaking of meals, La Condesa offers an extremely reasonable children's menu. The chicken nachos for $6 are an incredible bargain, while the $6 beef sliders are also off the hook. Also on the menu are tacos, guacamole, salsa, and an array of juices and sodas.
Be sure to stay for the homemade ice cream that has made this place famous. The flavors are quite unusual, but they work magic on the tastebuds: avocado lemon, honey vanilla, sour cream, birthday cake, brown sugar banana, cream cheese. And there are more combinations all the time.
What we loved were these dishes on an adult scale as well as the roasted corn on the cob on a stick. Yummy all around! Come here on a sunny day, and you can sit outside and enjoy the ambiance of people walking by with their dogs and the scenes of families shopping and talking. Not a bad life!
