Hotel Review: Pismo Lighthouse Suites
By Kathy Chin Leong
Pismo Lighthouse Suites in Pismo, Ca., is about as sweet and about as friendly-family as they come. With 70 cozy, two-room suites, the nautical décor of this place is enchanting. Lighthouse lamps, oars on the walls, lifesaver wall hangings, little swimmer statues in retro swim suits. Instead of a chain hotel, these decorating touches had me feel as though I was in someone's summer guest house for the weekend.
Everything about this wonderful hotel gets high marks. First, let's talk location. If you love the water, this oceanfront property gives you immediate beach access. Go downstairs, and you are right on the sand. If you forget your sand toys or sunscreen, the lobby gift shop has all the beach combing stuff you need to make your day complete. The hotel is only about a mle or two away from the Pismo Beach Pier and the shopping area with beach boutiques, cotton candy and salt water taffy stores.
Next, the premises are full of activities so no one gets bored. On site is a family play deck with a putting green, ping pong tables, a badminton court, and a giant chess/checker set. Steps away is the swimming pool. The hotel rooms are also outfitted with video game controllers so the kids can get their game fix if they get their way!
Family conveniences are first rate. A continental breakfast is held in the main building each morning and features basic bagels, pastries, boiled eggs, coffees, juices and fruit. My favorite is the make-your- waffle service so at least you get something hot to eat to start your day. The hotel has set out plenty of chairs and tables inside and around the porch area so no one has to jockey for a place to sit.
In the rooms, additional conveniences include a sink, refrigerator, microwave, and Internet access. The roll out sofa beds are great for the kids, and the living rooms are generously sized so Junior can spread his Legos on the floor with plenty of space to expand a baby playpen. I recommend families with little ones to request the bottom floor, and those with older kids should ask for an upper level suite with a lovely ocean view. The balconies come with chairs to bask in the sunshine.
No review of this place can leave out the great service from the office staff. I interacted with several folks during my two-day stay, requesting directions, extra hot water for my tea, and queries about local shuttles. Each person there was extremely friendly, kind, and attentive. The lobby also offers coffee, tea, and afternoon hot cookies from the oven, so do make sure you stop by. And if you need to check your email, a computer and printer stand is also in the front lobby, free to guests. The Pismo Lighthouse Suites is run by the Martin Resorts group which also manages the Avila Lighthouse Suites, a similar property in look and feel that is in the nearby town of Avila Beach.
Bottom line: Want a comfortable place with all the conveniences of beach access with morning breakfast? Pismo Lighthouse Suites gets four stars for its family-friendly atmosphere and friendly service.
